Waterfalls

The rivers and streams that crisscross New Hampshire frequently take a tumble thanks to our mountainous terrain. Some of the state's more than 100 waterfalls, like Silver Cascade and Flume Cascade on the north side of Route 302 in Crawford Notch, are visible from the road. Others, like Sabbaday Falls and Diana's Baths, are rewards at the end of a woodland hike.

Flume Gorge in New Hampshire's popular Franconia Notch State Park has lured travelers since the early 1800s. A spectacular 45-foot waterfall awaits families who venture along wooden walkways through this river-carved chasm.  Arethusa Falls in Crawford Notch State Park is often regarded as the tallest waterfall in New Hampshire, with a drop of around 140 feet.  It's a spectacular sight accessible by an easy half day hike.  But don't stop at Arethusa Falls- there are more than 10 waterfalls in and around Crawford Notch State Park.

Waterfall seekers should wear sturdy footwear—no leather soles or flip-flops. And be cautious when walking on wet rocks or across streams. You'll see waterfalls at their most vigorous in the spring, when New Hampshire's abundant snow cover melts and saturates rivers and streams.
